Homespun Christmas Placemat Craft Project

This quick and easy project gets a jumpstart by beginning with a purchased placemat as a foundation. We found this simple ribbed placemat at our local Walmart store. Any solid fabric placemat would work.

The bling on this project is available from our sister site: Jubilee Rhinestones. Visit that site to find this easy iron on Celebrate Jesus Christmas Wreath done in red, green and clear rhinestones.

Choose a complimentary or contrasting homespun plaid and stitch it onto the placemat as a border or "frame". Leave the edges raw and clip the raw edges about 1/2 inch apart. See more information about clipping seams for rag quilts here. Wash the placemat to create the nice fluffy ragged fray. You may need to press the placemat back into shape after washing. Be sure to press from the back side so the fray stays fluffy.

Now press your iron on rhinestone design onto the center of the placemat and you have a gorgeous sparkly new Christmas decor for your home or for a gift. Use this piece as a traditional placemat or use it as a fabric runner on a side table or coffee table.

If you decide to try this project, be sure to prewash your homespun fabrics and your placemat before stitching it all up so that any shrinkage will get out of the way.

Are you a creative person? Just think of all the possibilities for embellishing the center of this placemat! You could use more homespun appliques and stitch in a christmas tree and then decorate it with buttons. Or you could layer on different color homespuns in a raggedy stripe design. The possibilities are endless with this great placemat canvas.

I hope you enjoy this holiday project! It really is a quick one and we feel that it helps keep us focused on the true meaning of Christmas by filling our home with festive reminders. Have fun as you Celebrate Jesus this holiday season!
